Shawnee Mission School District Aquatic Center

Lenexa, Kansas

The arched roof of the aquatic center is inspired by water and embodies a wave shape. Glulam beams are perfectly suited for this type of roof structure. Three pieces of timber form the long-span beams connected to each other by moment connections. The glazed curtain wall enclosure allows for pedestrians to peek through the glass and watch events from outdoor, and ensures a great level of natural lighting inside the center. The complex houses a 50 m (164 ft) competition pool, a 22.8 m (75 ft) pool for swimming and diving lessons, two diving boards, and can sit a total of 1,200 spectators.
